Neutrino Astronomy using Radio Telescopes
Abstract
The origin of the most energetic particles observed in nature, the ultra high energy (UHE) cosmic rays (CR) is currently unknown. A key to untangling the origin of the UHE CR will be observations of UHE neutrinos produced during propagation of UHE CR, as well as those produced inside UHE CR sources, be they sites of acceleration or of super-massive particle decay. A potentially very powerful method of detecting the very low expected fluxes of UHE neutrinos is the method pioneered by Hankins, Ekers & O'Sullivan (1996), which uses ground-based radio telescopes to observe the coherent radio Cherenkov emission (Askar'yan effect) from neutrino-induced electromagnetic cascades in lunar regolith. Recent theoretical and experimental developments, and proposed experiments will be described.
