Future observations of the CMB and astrophysical emissions with the Planck mission

Abstract

The Planck mission, the third generation satellite dedicated to the measurement of the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background, is scheduled to be launched in 2008 by ESA. The HFI and LFI instruments will map the microwave sky with unprecendented accuracy at 9 different frequencies, providing a fantastic data set for scientific research in astrophysics and cosmology.

The scientific exploitation of the data, however, generates very challenging data analysis questions. I will give an overview of the main scientific objectives of Planck, and discuss the development of an advanced data processing and analysis chain for optimal usage of the Planck data sets. Some emphasis will be put on cosmological parameters, on CMB precision temperature and polarisation measurements, and on the detection of galaxy clusters through the Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect.
