Zoology of Cluster Galaxies

Galaxies are observed mainly in two flavors: spiral galaxies with active star formation, and elliptical galaxies with little active star formation. This galaxy bimodality is a function both of galaxy mass, as well as of environment, with cluster galaxies having lower levels of star formation, and being more likely to be ellipticals. I will review these phenomenological concepts, and the physical mechanisms that have been proposed to account for the environmental dependence. I will then present an analysis of the star formation properties of cluster galaxies in a sample of 500 clusters drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These data suggest that star formation in cluster galaxies is shut off on relatively slow timescales.
