Plasma physics of discs and the variability of accreting Black Holes

Turbulence induced by magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities drives accretion onto black holes, compact objects and (possibly) protostars. Recent simulations show that the nature of these large-scale flows may be critically dependent upon the microphysics of viscous and resistive dissipation in the plasma. In this talk I will review these issues, before describing our calculations of the microphysics of hyper-accreting disks that arise from the merger of compact objects and the collapse of rotating stellar cores. We argue that the atomic scale microphysics may drive global changes in the accretion disk, and thus ultimately be responsible for currently unexplained variability seen in X-ray binaries and in gamma-ray bursts.
