Topic: Phase transitions in the early universe

Phase transitions in the early universe and possible observational signatures

High temperatures--such as those encountered immediately following the Big Bang--often lead to the restoration of symmetry in spontaneously broken gauge theories. Multiple vacua become accessible as the temperature is lowered, leading to first- and second-order phase transitions among these metastable states. We will examine such phase transitions in gauge theories with an eye towards strong and electroweak symmetry breaking in the early universe.  We'll take a look at cosmological relics and possible observational signatures of early-universe phase transitions.
