Halo Assembly Bias in Hierarchical Structure Formation
I will discuss the origin of halo assembly bias, the dependence of halo clustering on assembly history. I will argue that assembly bias in dark matter halos may be understood in fairly simple terms. At high masses, the assembly bias observed in N-body simulations can be explained quantitatively by noting that massive halos in high-density environments have a larger mass supply and therefore grow more quickly than similar halos in low-density environments. At low masses, assembly bias appears driven by the cessation of mass accretion onto a sub-population of small halos. The old, low mass halos naturally tend to become unbiased, and hence more strongly clustered than their anti-biased peers.
