Structural Evolution in the Most Massive Galaxies

Hierarchical structure formation models predict that the most massive
dark matter halos form last.  Observationally, however, there is
contradictory for evidence for evolution in the most massive galaxy
population.  I will present results from studies of the structural
properties of the most massive galaxies, in both clusters and in the
field. Our results show that massive galaxies have evolved
structurally - they grow in size at a fixed mass and mae become
rounder - between z~1 and today.  This evolution occurs in a way that
consistent with results from simulations of disspationless mergers.
