The challenge for GLAST-LAT: quantifying the cosmic-ray-induced backgrounds

The cosmic-ray-induced backgrounds will become the biggest challenge in
interpreting data observed with GLAST Large Area Telescope. The
challenge can be broken down to three issues: lack of observational data
on the spectra and angular distribution of the albedo cosmic rays; lack
of computer programs capable of predicting the albedo cosmic rays along
the entire GLAST-LAT orbit; and lack of fast procedures to estimate the
background contribution in situ for wide ranges of GLAST-LAT data
analyses.

We need a workable strategy to solve these three issues: I will present
such a strategy. It consists of the following tasks:
1) Measure the albedo protons (and alphas) in situ with the GLAST-LAT
calorimeter
2) Expand a Monte Carlo program that has succeeded in predicting the
atmospheric neutrino fluxes over Kamioka and has been retuned to
reproduce the PAMELA data.
3) Establish a scheme where background simulation data can be quickly
readjusted for the real and probably time-dependent background
environment as well as non-standard choice of data filtering.
