How do gamma-ray bursts shine ?

I will give a (somewhat unorthodox) summary of the physical
processes that are most relevant for the prompt phase of GRBs,
and outline some insights to be gained about the emission
mechanism from time-resolved spectra and studies of temporal
variability.
