Why the EBL interpretation of the MAGIC result on 3C279 in the recent Science paper is most likely incorrect

The VHE spectrum of 3C279 has been used to derive
constraints on the amount of extragalactic diffuse background
light (EBL), as if the source was an HBL.
However, 3C279 --as any FSRQ-- has strong emission lines, indicating
an intense diffuse luminosity produced by the Broad Line Region.
This target field, typically used to successfully model the SED,
also causes internal gamma-gamma absorption.
The narrow-banded radiation field can yield a significant
hardening of the primary gamma-ray spectrum, depending on the location of
the emitting region. The uncertainty on the latter undermines any conclusion
on the EBL that can be drawn from the gamma-ray spectra of FSRQ objects.
On the other hand, the SED of 3C279 implied by the MAGIC result is highly
puzzling.
