The Gamma-Ray Albedo of the Earth
Looking from orbit, the Earth appears to be the brightest source of gamma
rays. These are produced by cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere (a
so-called gamma-ray albedo). This is normally regarded as a background for
observations of astronomical sources. However, for GLAST its observations
provides unique possibilities for checking instrumental parameters
and backgrounds as well as a mission lifetime calibration check.
I will talk about our work modelling the Earth gamma-ray and show an
initial comparison with L&EO data.
