The emission mechanism of the prompt gamma-rays and hard X-rays is still far from being settled, and the traditional optically thin synchrotron emission model has various problems and difficulties in explaining some of the data. Recently, photospheric emission has been suggested as a possible solution to some of these problems, where a quasi-thermal photospheric component in additon to a non-thermal component might explain some of the observed properties of the prompt spectum and perhaps even some of the observed correlations (the Amati relation etc.).
