Gravitational Lensing: The E! True Hollywood Story

The idea that light could be bent by gravity despite having no mass has been around since the 18th century.  With the invention of general relativity, lensing has evolved into an indispensable tool used to constrain cosmology, establish limits on the existence of MACHOs, and find exosolar planets.  Recently, gravitational lensing has provided evidence that dark matter exists and is separable from baryonic matter.  I will discuss the three regimes of lensing (strong, weak, and micro), and how each provides a window into different astrophysical problems.  The Bullet Cluster and the LSST will also be discussed in the context of lensing.  Finally, I will discuss lensing's harrowing story of drug-induced downward spiral, eventual redemption, and inevitable reunion tour.
