Asteroids and Comets: the crumbs between the couch cushions of the solar system

Between the nuclear bomb and climate change, it was the killer space-rock that briefly captivated the imaginations of Hollywood apocalypse aficionados, and for good reason: they are the likely explanation for several mass extinctions in Earth's geological record.  But what are these beasts, whose naming threatens to keep Hellenic historians gainfully employed for ages to come?  What are they made of and how did they form?  Could they be useful stepping stones for solar system exploration?  More importantly, can I make money off of them by staking a claim in absentia and sending NASA a bill for unpaid parking tickets?  What are the odds of a documentary on asteroids being broadcast on the History Channel the night before the talk, and of the speaker recording it?  How many consecutive interrogatives can reasonably be used in an abstract?  These are just some of the questions that will be inadequately addressed in this talk, to the delight of all.
