Active Galactic Nuclei

Active galactic nuclei, or AGNs, have fascinated and puzzled astronomers since time memorial.  But in the tens and tens of years since their discovery, we have made much progress in understanding them.  I will discuss, in my characteristically superficial and unsatisfyingly broad way, the history of AGN astronomy, the classification of the various types of AGNs, and the basic physics of AGNs, especially in the context of the unified AGN model.
