Andrew Sonnenschein (Fermilab) Bubble Chambers for Dark Matter Detection
Bubble chambers are promising devices for detection of weakly interacting dark matter particles (WIMPs). Many backgrounds present with other techniques can be suppressed by a careful choice of operating parameters and the use of multiple liquid targets would allow the exploration of spin-dependent and spin-independent couplings to different nuclei. The COUPP collaboration has recently published first results from a 1-liter chamber, indicating sensitivity competitive with other techniques. Two scaled-up versions of this chamber are in advanced stages of construction and may provide the world’s best sensitivity to WIMPs over the next few years.
