In this workshop, we will be covering the basics of current thinking in science education, building up our own knowledge in such areas as the learning-centered approach, backwards course design, and different learning styles. You will gain enough of a foundation in these topics that you can start applying the central ideas to your own educational activities. (The focus of the workshop will be on formal education, but the material is relevant to public outreach as well.) Suggested reading for further immersion into the subject of effective science teaching will also be provided. Be prepared to actively participate in the workshop.

Topics to be covered:

1)Teaching-centered/learning-centered instruction
2)Backwards Course Design, instructional objectives
3)Inquiry-based learning, active learning
4)Learning styles
5)Dealing with misconceptions
6)Effective assessment techniques

Everyone welcome! Please RSVP (mmueller@slac.stanford.edu, 650-926-3837) for an advance head count.
