Professor Steve Allen
Steve Allen's research interests (http://www.stanford.edu/group/xoc/) are
focused on galaxies and clusters of galaxies, using multi-wavelength
observations to study the physics of these systems and using large
statistical samples, and other leading data sets, to probe the nature of
dark matter and dark energy in the Universe.
A research opportunity exists for a student to work on new Subaru
wide-field lensing observations of extremely massive galaxy clusters
discovered in the Massive Cluster Survey. (This represents the best weak
lensing data set for large galaxy clusters ever gathered, and a pathfinder
for future work with LSST). This work will have initial goals of measuring
precise cluster masses and determining the mass-X-ray luminosity scaling
relation for galaxy clusters, a key ingredient of cosmological work. The
work will be carried out in collaboration with other team members.
