I will describe a technique that I recently developed to isolate the contribution of reionization to the small-scale CMB fluctuations in a model-independent way. This will allow future CMB experiments to unambiguously detect patchy reionization and study its properties. I will show that combining this new technique with constraints on the amplitude of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich power spectrum can break important physical degeneracies and allow us to better characterize the epoch of reionization.
