This seminar is about our understanding of galaxies in both astrophysical and cosmological contexts. We'll briefly cover structure formation and the need for dark matter (more on these in future seminars!), and we'll discuss how this picture fits in with galaxy formation: How does dark matter provide the backbone for galaxy formation? Why does gas cool and form stars/galaxies? What causes spiral vs. elliptical galaxies to form? We'll also go over several well-known "galactic scaling relations." Finally, we'll review some of the modern methods used to model and simulate galaxies.
