Inclusion @ KIPAC

KIPAC is committed to being a place where all of its members have the opportunity to do their best work. KIPAC supports efforts to broaden participation in the profession through hiring practices that look for talent everywhere, effective training and mentoring of students and postdocs, and bringing the excitement of science to the broadest possible audiences.

In 2021, the KIPAC community developed a Statement of Values and Code of Conduct, which we ask all members, visitors, and participants in our activities to agree to follow. We have regularly identified ways to nucleate and support community-driven efforts to build a more inclusive community. Current and previous efforts include the Women+ community at KIPAC and task forces on mentoring and career development, mental health, and institute policies.

KIPAC members have led and participated in several activities focused on broadening participation in physics and astronomy at all career stages, including programs to recruit undergraduates, post-bacsgraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows from a wide range of backgrounds. Stanford University recently released its IDEAL Strategic Plan, covering a range of strategies to improve inclusion, diversity, equity, and access across the institution,

KIPAC members also participate in a range of outreach and public engagement activities, including those that seek to make science accessible to people from all communities. Recent efforts have included the SPINWIP program for high school girls, outreach to Spanish-speaking high school students including a partnership with East Palo Alto schools, and our bi-annual community day.

The KIPAC leadership team also welcomes feedback on anything we can do to make KIPAC a more inclusive working environment for all (e.g., by emailing director@kipac.stanford.edu).
