Mertsch:Galactic cosmic rays are believed to be shock-accelerated in supernova remnants. In order to achieve the maximum energies implied by observations, the ambient magnetic fields must be amplified significantly. The plasma instability that enables this implies a dependence of the maximum energy on the age of the remnant. I will argue that this leads to characteristic features in the spectrum of cosmic rays that can be leveraged to identify individual sources. We have performed a sensitivity study showing that such features are in reach of the current generation of cosmic-ray experiments like AMS-02 or DAMPE.
